Victoria Falls tours are easiest to plan when you count Southern Africa touring days separately from travel to and from the US. Start with the nights available at your destination, then choose the connections, safari stops, and activities that fit.
Victoria Falls tours: the quick choice
A three-day, two-night Johannesburg extension is a practical starting point for a guided Victoria Falls visit and Zambezi sunset cruise. The main sightseeing falls between arrival and departure, giving you a day without an airport transfer.
Choose two days for a compact Falls visit when time is tight. Choose four days for another activity day, or a longer itinerary to combine Victoria Falls with Chobe or Kruger.
Your finished plan should identify the arrival airport, country sequence, hotel nights, activities, transfers, and included flight sectors. Build your US travel days around that regional itinerary.
Our Victoria Falls package comparison covers Johannesburg and Cape Town departures and safari combinations. Read each itinerary’s day-by-day route to judge how much sightseeing time you’ll have.
Before you choose a package
Victoria Falls planning requires your travel dates, party details, and priorities before you compare itineraries. Gather your US departure city, adult and child numbers, spending range, preferred accommodation comfort, and must-do experiences. Include dietary needs and mobility requirements so rooms, transfers, and outings fit your party.
Entry requirements depend on passport nationality, not US residence. The US Department of State gives these tourist-entry rules for US passport holders:
- Zimbabwe requires a tourist visa, available on arrival or through the official eVisa system.
- Zambia does not require a tourist visa for visits up to 90 days, within a 90-day calendar-year limit.
- Botswana does not require a visa for tourist stays up to 90 days.
- South Africa does not require a tourist visa for stays shorter than 90 days. Two consecutive empty visa pages are required per entry; endorsement pages do not count.
Check passport validity and blank-page requirements across the full route. Traveling through Johannesburg to Zimbabwe, continuing to Botswana, and returning to Zimbabwe requires checking both first entries and return crossings.
Arrange a travel-health appointment four to six weeks before departure, as advised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Bring your full itinerary, including safari destinations and transit countries.
Build your trip in 5 steps
Build your Victoria Falls route around available regional nights before adding optional experiences. Follow these steps to settle the duration, connections, season, safari combination, and activity mix in that order.
1. Set your regional trip length
A two-night Victoria Falls stay creates a sightseeing day between flights. A one-night stay is more compact, with transport occupying part of both package days.
Our two-day Victoria Falls tour from Johannesburg includes one hotel night, return Johannesburg–Victoria Falls flights, airport transfers, breakfast, and a guided Falls visit. Day 1 covers the Johannesburg pickup, airport connection, flight, and hotel transfer. The Falls visit takes place on Day 2 before the return journey.
The three-day Johannesburg tour adds a second night. Arrival is on Day 1, the guided Falls visit and Zambezi sunset cruise are on Day 2, and departure follows on Day 3. Choose this arrangement when you want both experiences on a day between flights.
The four-day Johannesburg tour provides three hotel nights. A sunset cruise is planned for arrival day, followed by the guided Falls visit on Day 2 and another activity day, including a game drive, on Day 3.
Count these as regional package days. A three-day tour starting in Johannesburg still needs room on either side for your US journey.
2. Map US and regional connections
Johannesburg is one gateway for connecting US travel with a Victoria Falls extension. United Airlines lists Newark/New York, EWR, to Johannesburg, JNB. Fastjet lists Johannesburg–Victoria Falls flights.
Treat the international and regional journeys as separate itinerary components until ticket arrangements are clear. Included Johannesburg–Victoria Falls flights do not establish US airfare inclusion or a protected international connection.
Match dated flights to the package’s pickups and transfers before purchasing US tickets. Consider a Johannesburg overnight if the available connection is too tight.
Check the airport codes against the accommodation country:
- JNB: Johannesburg, South Africa.
- VFA: Victoria Falls International Airport, Zimbabwe.
- LVI: Livingstone, Zambia, listed on Airlink’s Johannesburg–Livingstone route.
VFA and LVI are different airports in different countries. Selecting Livingstone instead of Victoria Falls changes your arrival country and transfer route.
For a Cape Town-based holiday, our five-day Cape Town and Victoria Falls tour includes Cape Town sightseeing, travel to Victoria Falls on Day 3, Falls sightseeing and a cruise on Day 4, and return to Cape Town on Day 5. Return flights from Cape Town are included, but the package route does not establish nonstop airline service.
3. Match dates to your priorities
Victoria Falls travel dates should reflect whether waterfall volume, clearer views, wildlife viewing, or an adventure activity matters most.
Zambia Tourism places typical peak flood conditions around March and April. Heavy spray can obscure the width of the Falls from walking viewpoints. Maximum water volume does not necessarily mean maximum visibility.
As flooding subsides, views generally become clearer through approximately September. Sections can dry from October, with the lowest flow typically around November and December.
For a Chobe combination, the Botswana Tourism Organisation identifies May through October as generally strongest for wildlife viewing. Animals concentrate around rivers, pools, and waterholes.
Peak waterfall flow and the driest safari conditions do not coincide. Rank your priorities before choosing a month: a traveler seeking heavy spray is choosing a different experience from someone prioritizing clear viewpoints and riverbank wildlife. These seasonal patterns guide planning; they are not a forecast for your travel dates.
4. Choose your safari combination
Chobe adds river-based wildlife viewing, while our Kruger combination includes a safari section reached by road from Johannesburg. Choose the experience and route that fit your wider holiday.
Our five-day Victoria Falls and Chobe National Park tour spends four nights across Zimbabwe and Botswana. Arrival and Falls sightseeing come first. Day 3 transfers into Botswana for a Chobe game drive; Day 4 combines safari activities with a river cruise.
The Botswana Tourism Organisation’s Chobe guide describes how game drives and cruises offer different wildlife-viewing perspectives. River outings can include hippos, crocodiles, water birds, and animals along the banks. Sightings remain unpredictable.
The Chobe itinerary’s departure transfer can use Kasane or Victoria Falls airport, depending on the arranged flights. Settle that airport before booking onward travel.
Our six-day Kruger safari with Victoria Falls from Johannesburg includes two nights near Kruger, one in Johannesburg, and two at Victoria Falls. Road travel connects the Kruger section with Johannesburg. The overnight there comes before the Victoria Falls flight, so this itinerary does not require a direct Kruger–Victoria Falls flight.
A different destination order or night count is a tailor-made arrangement, with its own route and inclusions. Our tailor-made journeys can also adjust lodge category, room style, safari activities, and transfer method.
5. Select your activity mix
A guided Victoria Falls visit is a useful anchor for a short stay. Fit a cruise, safari outing, or adventure experience around that priority and the time available between transfers.
Separate included experiences from optional extras. The three-day Johannesburg package includes the guided Falls tour and Zambezi sunset cruise. The five-day Cape Town combination lists helicopter flights, rafting, and bungee jumping as optional activities.
Zambia Tourism’s adventure guidance says Livingstone Island and Devil’s Pool generally close during very high water, commonly March through May. Reopening depends on river conditions.
Rafting also depends on water levels. Scenic flights are weather-dependent, and bridge activities can close during rain. Choose dates with those conditions in mind if one adventure is your main reason for traveling.
Match each activity’s location to your accommodation country and transfers. An experience near Livingstone may need a different route from a Zimbabwe-based outing. Leave unstructured time where an optional activity depends on conditions.
Check your itinerary before booking
Your day-by-day itinerary and itemized quote should account for the same complete journey. Read both from the first regional pickup to the final departure, checking that every night and connection fits.
Review these details before committing:
- Flights: Identify the exact included sectors. Keep US flights distinct from regional flights.
- Nights and transfers: Match every hotel night, arrival airport, pickup, and departure to the correct date and destination.
- Meals and fees: Check inclusions individually. The three-day Johannesburg package includes daily breakfast, the guided Falls tour, sunset cruise, and park fees. Lunches and dinners are excluded.
- Rooms and access: Review accommodation category, room arrangements, transfer method, and how dietary or mobility needs fit the planned days.
- Insurance: Review medical care, evacuation assistance, trip cancellation, and cover for your intended activities.
Africa Moja Tours and Safaris provides a complimentary, itemized quote and detailed itinerary. Use both to settle the full scope, especially where a custom journey differs from a fixed-duration package.
Fix common planning problems
Victoria Falls timing problems are best resolved by adjusting connections or night counts before adding activities. Use the mismatch in your plan to identify the change needed:
- A tight Johannesburg connection: Reassess the dated flights and consider an overnight before the regional tour.
- VFA on one booking and LVI on another: Align the airport, accommodation country, and transfer destination before purchasing flights.
- Too many outings for one night: Keep the main experience. Add a night or remove an optional outing.
- Heavy spray obscuring viewpoints: Use rain protection during high-water conditions. Reconsider the travel window if clearer views matter more than peak flow.
- An unavailable adventure activity: Retain time for another suitable experience or leisure.
A two-day itinerary has little spare time because both days include transport. Adding another pickup and outing cannot create the time that an extra hotel night provides.
Visa and health questions
Your Victoria Falls country sequence determines the visa checks and health advice your journey needs. Include overnight safari stops, return crossings, and airport transits when reviewing these questions.
Does KAZA cover overnight Chobe trips?
KAZA’s Botswana provision covers day trips through Kazungula; do not assume that provision covers an overnight Chobe stay. The Zambia Department of Immigration lists US nationals as eligible and permits multiple Zambia–Zimbabwe visits within its stated 30-day conditions. Match Botswana entry and subsequent re-entry permissions to your actual route.
What health precautions does this route need?
Malaria prevention belongs in your travel-health consultation. CDC Zimbabwe guidance identifies transmission throughout Zimbabwe, while CDC Botswana guidance includes Chobe National Park. Discuss prescription prevention with a clinician and use mosquito-bite precautions.
Yellow-fever vaccination is not routinely recommended for Zimbabwe or Botswana themselves. Documentation can depend on previous countries and certain airport transits longer than 12 hours, so share the complete routing.
