Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP) connects your safari flight with an onward road journey to your lodge or park gate. Choose your accommodation before booking flights, then allow time for the transfer, park entry, and any drive inside Kruger.
Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport essentials
Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, also called KMI or KMIA, is outside Kruger National Park, between Nelspruit and White River, as SANParks explains. Landing at MQP leaves a road journey before you reach your accommodation.
For first-time safari visitors, including travelers from the United States, the goal is a coordinated flight, lodge, and transfer itinerary. Your arrival must leave enough time for access deadlines and scheduled safari activities.
Before choosing flights, have your departure city, travel window, passenger count, budget, and preferred number of safari nights ready. An exact lodge is ideal; a preferred safari area gives you a starting point for comparing airports and onward transport.
Documents and health preparation
US travelers should prepare passport documents and malaria prevention before traveling to Kruger, separately from booking flights and accommodation.
The South African Embassy in Washington states that ordinary US passport holders visiting for tourism for 90 days or less do not need a visa. Passports must remain valid for at least 30 days after the intended departure from South Africa.
The US Department of State specifies two consecutive completely blank visa pages. Endorsement pages do not count.
The CDC identifies Kruger National Park and Mpumalanga’s Ehlanzeni District as malaria-transmission areas. Discuss prescription prevention with a clinician before departure; some medication must begin before travel. Pack repellent, long sleeves, and trousers, and use screened or air-conditioned accommodation.
For park entry, prepare identification and complete the gate registration and indemnity form available through SANParks. Arrange any required day-visitor reservation separately: an airport transfer does not reserve park access.
Airport-to-safari planning steps
A workable MQP arrival starts with the lodge and ends with a confirmed pickup. Use your travel dates, departure city, group details, and accommodation preferences to complete these steps before committing to flights.
1. Match your airport to your lodge
The right safari airport depends on your accommodation and its access route. Kruger Mpumalanga, Skukuza, and Hoedspruit are separate airports serving different itineraries.
Start with the exact lodge or reserve, then compare airport options. A flight destination containing the word Kruger does not establish the best arrival point. Compare the full journey, including the road transfer and any travel inside the park.
Sabi Sand Nature Reserve identifies Shaws, Newington, and Gowrie as its principal road entrances. The booked lodge determines the appropriate gate. A Kruger National Park entrance cannot substitute for a Sabi Sand reserve entrance.
Africa Moja Tours and Safaris offers two- to seven-day Kruger safaris from Johannesburg and Cape Town, with budget, mid-range, and Greater Kruger luxury options. Our fly-in planning matches your departure city and safari nights with the accommodation, arrival airport, and onward transfer.
2. Choose flights for your itinerary
MQP flight selection should follow the lodge-access plan, especially when you want an arrival-day safari activity.
As of October 2026, the airport’s departures display lists Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and Victoria Falls. Check schedules for your travel dates rather than assuming daily availability.
fastjet operates a direct Victoria Falls–Kruger Mbombela route, supporting a combined Victoria Falls and Kruger itinerary. Separately, Airlink has announced a Gqeberha–MQP service scheduled to begin Nov. 16, 2026. That service is an announced addition, rather than an already operating option.
For travel from OR Tambo to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, compare the connecting flight with your complete onward journey. Flying to MQP and taking a road shuttle from Johannesburg to Kruger National Park are different travel plans. Choose the option that fits your lodge arrival and available safari nights.
3. Arrange transfers and safari inclusions
Kruger safari packages should identify airport transfers, accommodation, meals, and game-drive arrangements individually. Private transport to the lodge does not automatically mean exclusive game drives.
Our private, air-conditioned MQP transfers provide door-to-door travel. Supply travel dates, passenger numbers, flight details, and the exact destination. Shared arrangements are available on request rather than through a published fixed timetable. KMI Airport also lists terminal car hire for self-drive travelers.
Our four-day privately arranged Kruger safari offers road-transfer or fly-in options. Typical components include three nights’ accommodation, transfers, guided game drives, conservation fees, and specified meals. Flights can be quoted separately. Choose shared lodge drives or an exclusive safari vehicle and guide, and record that choice in the itinerary.
Our three-day Johannesburg safari uses road transfers, with pickup options including OR Tambo. The itinerary includes two nights at Tembo Guest Lodge near Phabeni Gate, daily breakfast, shared open-vehicle safari drives, and park entry. Lunches and dinners are excluded.
Our five-day Cape Town safari combines Cape Town–Johannesburg flights with road transfers onward to Kruger. The itinerary includes four nights, breakfast and dinner, guided drives, a night safari, and a guided bush walk. Lunches and beverages are excluded.
The Cape Town example is not a direct Cape Town–MQP itinerary. Its SANParks rest-camp accommodation options also differ from a private luxury-lodge stay. Compare the transport method, named accommodation, and each included meal before choosing a package.
4. Calculate transfers and gate deadlines
MQP-to-gate travel and gate-to-camp travel are separate parts of your arrival. Reaching a park entrance does not mean you have reached your accommodation.
Use these approximate distances and times as planning points:
- MQP to Hazyview: About 55 km and 45–60 minutes with our transfer service. Hazyview is a town and accommodation area outside the park.
- MQP to Phabeni Gate: About 60 km and 50–65 minutes with our transfer service, before entry administration or driving inside Kruger.
- MQP to Crocodile Bridge Gate: About 120 km, according to SANParks.
The onward leg can change the schedule substantially. SANParks’ distances and directions puts Skukuza Main Rest Camp about 12 km, or 30 minutes, inside Paul Kruger Gate. From Phabeni Gate, the same camp is approximately 39 km and 1¾ hours away. Those endpoints refer to the rest camp, not Skukuza Airport.
A shorter airport-to-gate journey therefore does not establish the shortest journey to camp. SANParks recommends approximately 30 km/h for practical tourist-road planning inside Kruger, rather than ordinary highway speeds.
For a Kruger Shalati road transfer from MQP, request lodge-specific routing and timing rather than applying a generic gate estimate.
Build your arrival schedule around airport formalities, road travel, gate administration, and the drive to camp. Under SANParks’ seasonal gate schedule, entrance hours are 05:30–18:00 in October, 05:30–18:30 in November and December, and 06:00–17:30 from May through July. Check both entrance and rest-camp deadlines. Reaching the entrance before closing does not permit onward driving after camp gates close.
For departure, work backward from KMI Airport’s recommendation to arrive at least two hours before your flight. Add the full lodge-to-airport journey separately. For a return transfer from Hazyview, specify MQP rather than relying on the name Nelspruit alone.
Self-drive visitors should also consider daylight: US Department of State guidance advises avoiding driving outside metropolitan areas at night.
5. Meet your driver at arrivals
Our MQP transfer driver meets you in arrivals with a nameboard. Your confirmation provides the driver’s name, contact number, and pickup instructions, while flight tracking supports arrival coordination.
If you arrive on an international flight, have your passport open at the photograph page for passport control. That requirement is distinct from a domestic arrival.
KMI Airport’s terminal facilities include restaurants, retail outlets, public seating, lounges, and foreign exchange services. Luggage storage and baggage wrapping are also listed. Charging points and Wi-Fi vouchers support connectivity, but do not assume unlimited free Wi-Fi.
The information desk at the main terminal entrance can help you locate services. Car-hire services are within walking distance in the terminal.
According to KMI Airport’s parking information, Drop & Go is alongside the terminal and has wheelchair access. Porters assist with luggage at the main entrance. Shaded parking operates on a first-come, first-served basis without advance booking.
Keep your transfer confirmation accessible without relying on airport connectivity, so you can contact the driver directly.
Your written itinerary checkpoints
A complete written itinerary should connect every flight, lodge night, transfer, and safari activity before you pay a deposit.
Check these details across your confirmations:
- Match the arrival airport code, exact lodge, access gate, and transfer destination.
- Identify included meals, conservation fees, and whether flights are included or quoted separately.
- Specify shared lodge drives or an exclusive safari vehicle and guide.
- Allow realistic time for arrival-day activities and the return airport journey.
For SANParks accommodation, occupation is normally expected from 14:00, though not guaranteed, and departure is required by 10:00. Private lodges have their own arrangements. A flight landing before check-in does not establish when your room or first activity will be available.
Flight delays and arrival problems
A delayed MQP flight requires immediate coordination with your transfer provider and accommodation, especially when your route includes park gates.
Contact both parties as soon as the delay affects your onward schedule. Flight tracking helps coordinate pickup, but park-access deadlines still apply. SANParks late entry is restricted to qualifying emergencies and eligible prebooked stays. Do not plan around late entry as a routine extension of gate hours.
If your driver is not visible, use the contact number in your transfer confirmation. The airport information desk at the main terminal entrance can help you find assistance.
Resolve any destination mismatch before leaving the airport. Hazyview, Phabeni Gate, Skukuza Main Rest Camp, and a private-reserve lodge are different endpoints, each with different onward travel requirements.
Airport transfer FAQs
MQP transfer arrangements should account for luggage, children, and mobility needs before your vehicle is assigned.
What luggage can my transfer carry?
Our standard transfer allowance is one medium suitcase and one carry-on per person. Trailers can accommodate additional luggage or equipment; identify extra bags when booking.
Flight baggage limits remain airline-specific. Confirm those separately, especially when combining an airport transfer with a fly-in safari.
Can I request seats or assistance?
Infant, toddler, and booster seats are available on request. Provide children’s ages and weights when booking.
Low-step vehicles and additional transfer assistance can also be arranged. Include mobility needs alongside passenger and luggage details so the pickup arrangements reflect your group’s requirements.
