Day 1 — Cape Town to Hazyview

The drive from OR Tambo to Hazyview is approximately 4.5 to 5 hours. The route crosses the Highveld, drops down the escarpment, and ends in Mpumalanga’s Lowveld, the agricultural belt that fringes Kruger’s southern and central regions.

Day 2 — Kruger National Park and Return to Cape Town

Total game-drive time across the two days is approximately seven hours: one half-day drive on Day 1 in the afternoon and one half-day drive on Day 2 in the morning. The morning drive is the higher-probability slot for predator sightings, which is why we keep it as the longer of the two.

2-Day, 3-Day, or 4-Day from Cape Town: How to Choose

Two days is the minimum that gets you into Kruger from Cape Town with one real night in the bush. It is not the most game-drive time you can buy for the money. The table below helps you size the trip against what you actually want to see.

If your Big Five list is the priority, three days gives you a meaningfully higher chance of seeing all five than two. Two days is enough to see lion, elephant, buffalo, and rhino on most departures; leopard is the most elusive and is more reliably ticked on three- and four-day itineraries.

When to Go: Seasonal Guide

A 2-day safari leaves no room to wait out weather. The dry-season months from May to September are the highest-confidence months because animals cluster near visible water and bush is thinner. The green season delivers a more dramatic landscape and is the better choice if photography of birds, newborns, or storm light matters to you.

Practical Logistics

Cape Town pickup zones. V&A Waterfront, Camps Bay, Sea Point, Green Point, the CBD, Constantia, the Atlantic Seaboard, and Cape Town International Airport hotels are all covered. Cruise pickups happen at the V&A cruise terminal. Pickup time is 04:00 unless your flight schedule changes.

Luggage. Domestic flights between Cape Town and Johannesburg allow checked luggage. A soft duffel is the easiest bag to handle on the road transfer to Hazyview because it stacks better in the vehicle than hard cases. Keep a small day pack with camera, layers, sunscreen, and any medication you need on the drives.

Malaria. Kruger is a low-risk malaria zone. Most international travelers take antimalarial prophylaxis as a precaution. Consult your doctor four to six weeks before travel. Cape Town and Johannesburg are malaria-free.

Yellow fever. A yellow fever certificate is required only if you are arriving in South Africa from, or transiting 12 hours or longer through, a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Direct flights from the United States, United Kingdom, and most of Europe do not require it.

What to pack. Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, beige), a warm jacket and beanie for the early-morning drive, a sun hat, SPF 30+, insect repellent, a camera with a zoom lens, binoculars if you have them, and closed shoes. Avoid bright colours and pure white on game drives.

Currency and payments. The South African Rand is the local currency. Most card payments are accepted at the lodge, on the road, and at Kruger rest-camp restaurants. Carry some cash for tips, curio shops, and small roadside purchases.

Fitness. Game drives are seated in open vehicles. There is no required walking. The two long travel days (Day 1 morning and Day 2 evening) are the most tiring element of the trip, not the safari itself.
